Every week, 13,500 tonnes of residual waste is collected from homes and businesses around Melbourne. At the Melbourne Regional Landfill, we’re finding new ways to use this waste to its full potential.
As waste decomposes, chemical and microbial activity creates landfill gas. By capturing this landfill gas, we’re able to reduce odour and minimise greenhouse emissions.
Landfill gas contains between 40-60% methane, a major component of the natural gas we use at home.
The methane is extracted and funnelled through a flowline to our Biogas energy plant, where it powers huge generators that produce electricity.
The electricity produced is fed straight back into the local grid generating 34,000 megawatts of renewable energy every year, powering around 4,000 homes.
